BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior Lauren Buschmann posted her sixth double-double of the year with game-highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds and freshman Tierra Shumpert came off the bench to add a career-high 17 points to help the Vermont Catamounts earn their second straight victory with a 69-48 win over visiting Binghamton at Patrick Gymnasium.
Vermont improves to 8-9 overall and moves to 2-2 in America East, while Binghamton falls to 8-9 on the year and dips to 2-2 in league play.
“I am very proud of their effort tonight. They put together a more complete game than we've seen this season,” said Vermont head coach Lori Gear McBride.
Binghamton held a 4-0 lead to start the game, but the Catamounts answered with a 17-5 run over eight minutes to push out in front 17-9 with 8:28 left in the half. The Bearcats cut the lead to four on a basket by Andrea Holmes, but UVM answered again with an 8-2 spurt to push its lead out to 10, 25-15, with 3:27 left. Binghamton responded by closing the half with a 12-0 run, behind seven points from Holmes, and took a 27-25 lead into halftime.
“We got into foul trouble at the end of the half and had some unusual lineups out there and were out of sorts a little bit. But the players that were out on the floor did a good job holding the line and we didn't go into halftime without being down by too much.”
Binghamton held a 35-33 lead at the 15:01 mark of the second half and that's when the Catamounts dialed up the intensity on defense. Vermont held the Bearcats without a field goal for the next 10 minutes and pushed out to a 15-point lead behind a 24-7 run. UVM extended its lead to 20 points in the closing minutes to polish off the victory.
“We increased the intensity in the second half and the team is getting more confident as they see the rewards of the defensive intensity fueling our offense,” said Gear McBride.
The Catamounts' defense held the Bearcats to 25 percent shooting (6-for-24) in the second half, while UVM converted 46.9 percent of its shots from the floor in the stanza.
Buschmann added a career-high five assists to go with her double-double effort. Classmates Shanai Heber and Lauren Wheeler chipped in 10 points each to round out the leading scorers for the Catamounts.
“Tierra Shumpert is getting better and better with every game and her confidence is growing. It was great to see four or five players have good games. That balanced attack and balanced scoring is important for us so teams can't just focus on Lauren Buschmann,” continued Gear McBride.
Holmes led Binghamton with 14 points and five assists, while Orla O'Reilly chipped in 12 points and Viive Rebane added eight points and nine rebounds.
Vermont returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 14) when it hosts New Hampshire at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WCAXtra, the digital channel of the CBS affiliate, WCAX, in Burlington.
