Catamounts opened the EISA Carnival season piling up over 1,000 points

NEWRY/RUMFORD, Maine – For the second straight year the Vermont Catamounts opened the EISA Carnival season piling up over 1,000 points. UVM captured the season-opening Bates Carnival with 1,004 points, 167 more than second place Dartmouth.
On the final day of competition, three Catamounts stood atop the podium in the four races.
Senior Caitlin Patterson won her first race of the year and eighth in the last 10 EISA races dating back to last season. Patterson finished the women's 10K classic race with a time of 31:43.8, beating out teammate Amy Glen by five seconds. Glen crossed the finish line in a time of 31:49.2 to earn a spot on the podium. Lucy Garrec, who skated to victory yesterday in the 5K freestyle, placed fourth (31:52.3), while Anja Gruber was fifth with a time of 32:00.8.
In the men's 10K classic, Franz Bernstein was UVM's top skier for the second straight day. After finishing third in the 10K freestyle yesterday, he placed second in Saturday's race with a time of 27:28.5. Fritz Horst earned a 10th place finish (27:43.8) and Scott Patterson rounded out UVM's top three skiers, placing 13th overall (27:47.0).
The alpine teams competed in the slalom on Saturday. The UVM men's team was impressive, sweeping the event. Defending NCAA Slalom Champion, Tim Kelley paced the Catamounts, to win his first EISA race of the year. He put down the fastest time of the day in the first run (49.87) and finished with a two-run total of 1:44.62.
Teammate Bobby Farrell, the winner of the GS on Friday, was second with a time of 1:46.59. Sean Higgins completed the Vermont podium with a third place time of 1:47.04.
Kevin Drury and Taylor Wunsch placed sixth and eighth, respectively, to put five Catamounts in the top-10.
In the women's slalom race, newcomer Elli Terwiel had the fastest time of the second run (52.23) which propelled her to her first collegiate win with a time of 1:42.51. Terwiel, fresh off four World Cup race appearances, was second in the GS on Friday.
The next stop on the EISA Circuit is the UNH Carnival on Jan. 27-28. The alpine races will be held at Attitash Mountain, while the Nordic events will be at the Jackson XC.
