NEWRY/RUMFORD, Maine – The University of Vermont ski team opened the 2012 season at the Bates Carnival.  After the first day of competition, the Catamounts own a 113-point lead over Dartmouth with 531 points.   UVM placed first as a team in three of the four disciplines.

Senior Lucy Garrec, a native of Freeport, Maine, paced the Catamounts in the women's 5K freestyle at Black Mountain in Rumford, Maine.  She picked up a win to open the 2012 season, finishing over 10 seconds ahead of teammate Caitlin Patterson with a time of 14:08.4.  Patterson clocked in with a time of 14:21.3 for second place and her first podium appearance of the year.  Senior Amy Glen added a fifth place finish with a time of 14:47.9.  Overall Catamounts took seven of the top-20 spots in the race.

“We had a good start to the year,” said UVM Nordic head coach Patrick Weaver.  “It was great to see us finish 1-2-5 and I'm excited for the whole team with seven skiers in the top-20.”

In the men's 10K freestyle, senior Franz Bernstein earned his first podium appearance of the year with a third place finish and time of 26:46.0.  Scott Patterson followed in sixth and Peter Hegman was seventh to round out the top three finishers for UVM.

“I was good to see Peter, who hasn't been our third skier in the past, finish third today with a strong performance.  It was also exciting to see our younger skiers do well in their first races at the collegiate level,” continued Weaver.

Both the men's and women's alpine teams captured the first two spots in the GS races held at Sunday River.  The men's team earned a sweep of the podium.  Newcomer Bobby Farrell won the race in his collegiate debut with a two-run total of 2:27.55, including the fastest time in the second run, 1:13.54.  Teammates Kevin Drury (2:28.61) and Sean Higgins (2:28.65) joined Farrell on the podium, finishing second and third, respectively.

The women nearly completed the alpine sweep.  Newcomers Kristina Riis-Johannessen and Elli Terwiel finished 1-2 and Kate Ryley earned fourth place.  Riis-Johannessen put together back-to-back runs of 1:15.65 for a winning total of 2:31.20.  Terwiel, fresh off four World Cup race appearances, had the fastest run of the race, 1:15.57, during her second run down the hill and posted a total of 2:33.02. Ryley posted a time of 2:34.15.  Newcomer Elise Tefre placed eighth to give the Catamounts four skiers in the top-10.

“It was a great first day,” said UVM alpine head coach Bill Reichelt.  “We are very happy with the efforts of all the freshmen in their carnival debuts.”

The second day of the Bates Carnival is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 21) with the first run of the men's slalom.
