BURLINGTON --- Jacob Tanis went 4-for-4 with three RBI, including a tie-breaking RBI infield single in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Vermont Lake Monsters defeated the Connecticut Tigers 9-7 in game one of a New York-Penn League doubleheader Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field. The Tigers earned a split of the twinbill with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
Vermont scored three runs in the first inning of the opener on a Chris Bostick RBI double and John Wooten two-run homer for a 3-0 lead, but the Tigers scored six unearned runs on in the top of the third off Lake Monsters starter J.C. Menna. The big blow of the inning was a two-out grand slam homer from Zach Kinsey on a 3-2 pitch. Vermont fought back to tie game game with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, including a pair of Tanis RBI singles.
Connecticut retook the lead in the top of the sixth on a Jared Reaves RBI double, but the Lake Monsters scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Chad Lewis led off with a double and scored on a Kelvin Rojas RBI single. Two outs later Bostick reached on a fielding error before Tanis' infield single plated Rojas and Bostick scored on a fielding error on the play to give Vermont a 9-7 lead.
Wooten finished with three of Vermont's 12 hits in the opener, including his second home run of the season and the first for a Vermont player at Centennial Field this season. Logan Chitwood (3-0) allowed one run in two innings of relief for his third win in just 10 Lake Monster games overall. Will Clinard (0-1) gave up two runs (one earned) in 1 1/3 innings to take the loss for Connecticut.
Connecticut scored two runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings of game two for the doubleheader split. Brett Harrison had an RBI double and scored on a groundout in the two-run third off Lake Monsters starter Brent Powers (0-1). The Tigers added a Jared Reaves RBI single and Danry Vasquez RBI triple in the fifth, then got RBI singles from Reaves and Juaner Aguasvivas in the seventh.
The Lake Monsters scored single runs in the sixth on a John Wooten RBI double and the seventh on a Brett Vertigan RBI groundout. Wooten was 2-for-3 in game two and finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with three RBI as Vermont (6-4) had a four-game winning streak snapped with the game two loss.
The Lake Monsters homestand continues on Thursday night with the first of a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners beginning at 7:05 pm. Thursday is People's United Bank Night and also the first Kids Eat Free Thursday courtesy of Heritage and the H-Team.
