Baseball: Hornets' Jurkiewicz Shuts Out MMU

Lefty spins four hitter in 2-0 Essex Win

Essex --- Steve Jurkiewicz scattered four hits and struck out six on Thursday afternoon, pitching the Essex Hornets to a 2-0 win over the Mt. Mansfield Cougars in high school baseball action at the Essex Field.

Jurkiewicz retired the first eleven Cougar hitters before MMU's Cody Sharrow broke up the perfect game bid with a seeing eye single through the left side with two out in the fourth. He then worked around a Josh Fitzgerald leadoff single in the sixth before giving up back to back singles to Josh St. Clair and Grant McKinstrie with one out in the seventh.  But with the tying runs on board he induced a infield pop up by T.J. Wesson and fanned Mike Bouffard to nail down the win.

Essex scored their first run in the first inning against Wesson, who tossed a complete game in suffering the defeat. Jack Valley led off with a single. He stole second, went to third on a Reece Tanguay single, and scored on a Kevin Guild sacrifice fly. They added an insurance run in the fifth when Valley was hit by a pitch, went to second on a Tanguay single, and scored on a two out single to right by Jurkiewicz.

Jurkiewicz finished with six strikeouts. He did not walk a man. Wesson tossed a five hitter. He walked two and struck out two.  With the win Essex improves to 8-4. MMU is 9-3.
