Mulcahy's 12 Second Half Points Help Essex to Hold Off Burlington 57-49
Burlington --- Matt Mulcahy score eight straight points late in the third quarter as the Essex Hornets built a 17 point lead, and the Hornets held on to beat the Burlington Seahorses 57-49 on Tuesday night at Buck Hard Gym.
The Seahorses had cut a 13 point Essex halftime lead down to nine before Mulchay went to work, sticking a two pointer followed by a pair of three pointers in a run that stretched the lead back out to seventeen. It was fifteen going to the final eight minutes, and while BHS would make a couple of fourth quarter runs, moving as close as seven, they would run out of time.
Essex built their lead in the first half largely on the play of guards Dee Barnes and Billy McGrath. Barnes stuck a pair of three pointers on route to an eight point half, while McGrath came off the bench to hit three twos and a three for nine.
Burlington rallied in the second behind the play of Stefan Radan who chipped in ten points over the final two quarters, finishing with a team high 16 for the night. Alex Carrier came off the bench to bury three three pointers on his way to an 11 point night for the'Horses.
Mulcahy led the Hornets with 16 points. Barnes added 13 and McGrath finished with ten.
With the win Essex is 4-2. Burlington slips to 1-5.
