Green Knights Go to 14-1 With 68-49 Win at Essex

Five starters combine for all 68 Rice points

 

Essex Junction --- The Rice Green Knights ended the first half on a 15-2 run on Thursday night, opening an eighteen point halftime lead and going on to beat the Essex Hornets 68-49 on Jean Robinson Court.

Essex had cut a ten point Rice lead to five at 24-19 late in the half before Rice rode the stellar play of Marcus Willingham, Casey Tipson and Tommy Fitzgerald to the big finish and the big halftime advantage. The three combined for 18 of Rice's 23 second quarter points. Rice stretched the lead to 21 in the second half, and despite a game effort the Hornets never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Rice's five starters combined for all 68 of their points, with all five finishing in double figures. Willingham led the way with 17 points ... Tipson finished with 16 ... Tim Rensch chipped in 14 ... Jake Maynard contributed 11 ... and point guard Fitzgerald ended the night with 10 points, eight assists and just one turnover.

Tom Carton led the Hornets with 15 points.

With the win Rice is 14-1. They have won 14 straight. Essex slips to 6-10. The Hornets have dropped eight of their last nine.
