VESTAL, N.Y. – UVM freshman Niki Taylor, the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, scored a team-high 14 points, but the Binghamton Bearcats used a 13-3 run to start the second half to post a 54-43 victory over the Catamounts at the Events Center in America East women's basketball action.
Binghamton improves to 12-13 and 6-6 in America East, while Vermont falls to 9-16 and 3-9 in the league.
“I thought we played a good first half, but our rebounding and transition defense was our downfall in the second half,” said Vermont head coach Lori Gear McBride. “Niki continues to give us consistent and solid performances inside. Binghamton did a nice job not letting Kayla (Burchill) or Sam (Simononis) get the open looks we needed to have a balanced attack.”
Taylor scored 10 points in the first half to lead the Catamounts to a 24-23 lead at the break. Neither team held more than a four-point advantage in the first 20 minutes and the half featured five ties and six lead changes.
The Catamounts held Binghamton to 34.5 percent shooting from the floor in the half and forced the Bearcats into eight turnovers, which resulted in nine points for Vermont.
Binghamton scored the first seven points of the second half and put together the decisive run to push out to a 36-27 lead at the 13:26 mark of the stanza. The Bearcats held the Catamounts without a field goal for an eight minute stretch and eased to the win.
Vermont was limited to 22 percent shooting from the field in the second half and the Bearcats out rebounded the Catamounts 48-31 in the game.
Taylor added five rebounds and classmate Tierra Shumpert chipped in 10 points. Senior Ashley Hoyt came off the bench to score a season-high seven points and contributed five rebounds.
Andrea Holmes led a trio of Bearcats in double figures with a game-high 17 points. Viive Rebane posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Orla O'Reilly added 11 points.
Vermont returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 11) when it travels to New Hampshire. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
