Barron with 16, Derda with 12 for the Green Knights
South Burlington --- The Rice High girls basketball team finally broke open a sloppy game with an 18 point fourth quarter to beat the Burlington High Seahorses 41-26 on Tuesday night on Bernie Cieplicki Court.
The fourth quarter was a contrast to the rest of the game. Rice outscored Burlington 18-13 in the final eight minutes ... previous to that the Green Knights had outscored the Seahorses 23-13 over the first twenty-four.
The turnover filled first half was ugly. Burlington's game plan involved slowing the game down by holding the ball. and they did accomplish that, as Rice led by a point 7-6 after one quarter, then outscored the 'Horses 7-3 in the second to go up by five, 14-9 at the break. The third quarter began with more of the same ... BHS score the only point in the first four minutes ... but Rice rode the hot hand of sophomore Hailee Barron to a 9-3 edge the rest of the period to go up ten after three.
The game opened up in the fourth as BHS started taking the ball to the basket, and they doubled their point production over the first three. But they couldn't contain Rice's 6-1 junior Cassidy Derda, who scored ten points in the final frame as the Knights stretched the lead out to the final fifteen point margin.
Barron finished the night with 16 for the winners. Derda added 12. Olivia Maher and Kylah Jones led the Seahorses with seven points each.
With the win Rice is 7-3. Burlington is 2-8.
