Green Knights Build Huge First Half Lead, Roll Past Hornets

Rice Goes Up 44-13 at Break on route to 78-34 win over Essex

South Burlington --- The Rice Memorial High School Green Knights powered their way to a 44-13 halftime lead, then cruised to a 78-34 win over the Essex Hornets on Monday night on Bernie Cieplicki Court.

Jake Maynard banged in 10 points including a halfcourt three pointer at the buzzer as Rice took a 19-9 lead after the first quarter, and the Knights then carried that momentum into a 25-4 second quarter explosion that pushed the margin to 31 at the break. Essex made a brief 7-2 run to begin the second half, but Rice regrouped and outscored the Hornets 16-5 the rest of the third quarter and won the game going away.

Maynard led the Green Knights with 17 points. Casey Tipson added 14, Marcus Williingham chipped in 12, and Tim Rensch and Matt Maynard put up nine each. Dee Barnes led the Hornets with six.

The win for Rice was their ninth straight. They are 9-1 on the year, and will host the only team to beat them, Mt. Mansfield, in a rematch on Thursday night.

With the loss, their fourth straight, Essex slips to 5-6.
