Purple Knights Earn Second With 3-3 Tie With Becker

SOUTH BURLINGTON - The Wesleyan University men's ice hockey team claimed the title at the seventh annual Saint Michael's College Holiday Classic on Saturday at Cairns Arena, notching a 5-0 victory over Salve Regina University. The Purple Knights knotted Becker College, 3-3, in the other contest to take second.

 

Saint Michael's, which moved to 2-6-2, received 41 saves from junior Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard), as he and classmate Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) were all-tournament selections. Geary added an assist after netting yesterday's overtime winner. Junior Justin Castagna (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Angeles Kings) had a goal and an assist, while sophomore Ryan Arsenault (Reading, Mass./New Hampton School) and freshman Will Cote (Quebec City, Quebec/Rice Memorial) each scored.

 

Arsenault and Cote netted second-period markers, giving the hosts a 2-0 edge, before Becker notched the next two goals and overcame Castagna's power-play goal at 15:06 of the third with one of its own at 17:00. Senior Jeremy Narducci (Apex, N.C./Queen City Steam) and sophomore Korby Anderson (Owantonna, Minn./Rochester Ice Hawks) each had a goal and an assist for the 3-8-1 Hawks, while freshman Andrew Bates (Marblehead, Mass./Boston Bulldogs) also scored. Sophomore Shaun Millerick (Hampton, N.H./Berwick Academy) was named all-tournament after making 32 saves.

 

Wesleyan junior Glenn Stowell (Hadley, Mass./Phillips Academy) was named tournament MVP after posting a 26-save shutout in the opener, helping the Cardinals move to 7-3. Junior Nick Craven (Fort Collins, Colo./Phillips Academy) and sophomore Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Proctor Academy) each had a goal and an assist, while senior Tom Salah (Gloucester, Mass./Northwood School) provided three helpers. Tasiopoulos joined Stowell on the all-tournament team.

 

For Salve Regina, which is now 3-10, junior Mike McDonald (Whitby, Ontario/Lake Forest) made 14 saves in the first 21:12. Classmate Jacob Hutt (Menlo Park, Calif./Curry) was named all-tournament.

 

Saint Michael's breaks until Tuesday, Jan. 10, when it heads to Southern New Hampshire University for a 7:30 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference contest.
