Essex Goes to 6-0 ... Drops BFA to 4-1 in Early Season Showdown
Essex Junction --- Steve Jurkiewicz's third period goal broke a 2-2 on Wednesday evening, sending the Essex Hornets to a 3-2 win over the BFA Bobwhites in a battle of unbeaten Division One boy's hockey powers at the Essex Rink.
Jurkiewicz took the puck end to end before burying it behind Bobwhite goaltender Andre Morin at 3:21 of the third to give Essex the lead for good ... putting the clamps on a BFA comeback that had brought the St. Albans club back from a 2-0 deficit.
Essex took a 2-0 first period lead, scoring on an end to end rush by defenseman Pat Abbott at 9:30, then adding a second goal when Jurkiewicz set up Brody Almeida with BFA facing as delayed penalty at 12:55. However the Bobwhites responded quickly, with Matt Palmer burying a Brandon Streeter rebound just a minute and three seconds later to cut the Hornet lead to 2-1.
It stayed that way through a scoreless second period, as both teams failed to take advantage of powerplay chances, including lengthy five on threes. But BFA got the game even at the fifteen second mark of the third as Captain Mike Schreiner banged home the rebound of a Taylor Raftery point shot. But Jurkiewicz answered three minutes and six seconds later and Essex held on for the win.
Pat Campbell made 20 saves in backstopping Essex to the win. Morin was strong in defeat, making 28 saves on 31 Essex shots. With the win the Hornets are now 6-0 on the season. The loss, BFA's first of the year, drops the Bobwhites to 4-1.
