Knights Yield Game Winner with One Second Remaining

FOXBORO, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team took a 2-0 lead against Assumption College before falling 3-2 on Tuesday at the Foxboro Sports Center in a Northeast-10 Conference contest, yielding the winning goal with one second remaining.

The Purple Knights slipped to 1-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the NE-10, as the loss snapped their 10-game regular-season league unbeaten streak. The Greyhounds improved to 4-3-1 and 1-0-1.

For Saint Michael's, senior Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery) netted a goal and an assist, while junior Dan Pelletier (Sutton, Mass./South Kent School) also scored. Junior goalie Eric McGuirk (Rehoboth, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) made 26 saves in his collegiate debut, including 12 in the third period alone.

For Assumption, seniors Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, Mass./Worcester Academy) and Pat O’Kane (Hollis, N.H./Bishop Guertin) each recorded a goal and an assist, while sophomore Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) added a tally. Senior goaltender Nick Blanchette (Stuart, Fla./Worcester Academy) made 35 saves.

The Purple Knights took an early lead with Earle netting a short-handed goal just 2:41 into the first period. Pelletier converted again for Saint Michael's 7:58 into the second period off a power play, bringing the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead. The Greyhounds answered back 1:55 later, with Larson finding the back of the net unassisted.

Mattiello knotted the contest 3:37 into the third on a power play, and the deadlock remained until the final moments of the contest, when Assumption took the lead on O'Kane's game-winner with just one second remaining.

The Purple Knights return to home action on Dec. 2 to host Skidmore College in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East contest at 7 p.m.
