Purple Knights Men Fall to University of New England 6-2

BIDDEFORD, Maine. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team held the University of New England to a scoreless first period before falling 6-2 on Saturday at Biddeford Ice Arena in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East contest. The Purple Knights slipped to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Nor'easters are 1-3 and 1-3.

 

Senior Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery) and junior Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) both netted a goal and an assist for the Purple Knights while sophomore Sam Torney (Shelburne, Vt./Bridgewater Bandits) tallied two assists. Junior goalie Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) made 30 saves.

 

Sophomore Zach Lokey (Elizabethtown, Pa./Gloucester Rangers) netted three goals and an assist for the Nor'easters while senior Scott McManaman (Amherst, Nova Scotia/Pictou Weeks Crushers) and freshmen Chris Glover (McFarland, Wis./Boston Bulldogs) and Jared Melman (San Jose, Calif./Portland Jr. Pirates) each added a goal. Sophomore Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich./Southern Maine) made 27 saves in goal.

 

The Purple Knights and the University of New England played through a scoreless first period, as the visitors held a 12-11 edge in shots. The Nor'easters broke onto the board during a power play 6:19 into the second period, starting a flurry of four goals in 2:58. The hosts converted again at 8:03 before Geary answered at 9:01 off assists from Earle and Torney, making it 2-1.

 

A penalty was assessed to the University of New England on the goal, providing the Purple Knights with a chance to knot the game on the power play, but Melman pushed his team's lead to 3-1 on a short-handed marker 16 seconds after Geary's tally.

 

The Nor'easters scored two goals in the first 13:32 minutes of the third period, but Earle converted for the Purple Knights on a power play at 15:34, netting his third goal of the season thanks to passes from Geary and Torney. With 10 seconds remaining on the clock, Lokey completed his hat trick on the power play.

 

The Purple Knights return to home action on Friday to host Saint Anselm College in an ECAC East and Northeast-10 Conference contest at 7 p.m.
