Four Goal Third Period Carries Essex to Come From Behind Win
Essex Junction --- The undefeated Essex Hornets came from behind, scoring four goals in the third period, to beat the Colchester Lakers 5-3 in boy's hockey action on Wednesday night at the Essex Rink.
After Essex grabbed a 1-0 lead on a JT Begnoche goal just over five minutes into the game Colchester tied it on a Matt Porter goal at 9:34. It was 1-1 after a period. The Lakers then scored the only goal of an exciting back and forth second period ... Avery Steele putting away a Matt Cuce feed at 12:20 for a 2-1 lead after two.
But Colchester took a penalty at the end of the second, and Essex made them pay 1:07 into the third as Pat Abbott's powerplay goal tied the game at two. It also ignited a scoring frenzy. Just 32 seconds later Colchester went back on top 3-2 as Steele netted his second goal of the game. And 30 seconds after that Essex got it even again at 3-3 on a Steven Morse shot from the high slot.
It stayed that way into the final five minutes of the third when the Lakers took another penalty. Given their second powerplay chance of the night Essex capitalized again, as co-captain Lucas Martin tapped in a back door feed from Jack Cabanaw for a 4-3 lead with 4:38 remaining. Martin then sealed the deal with an empty net goal with six seconds left.
Pat Campbell backstopped the win in the Essex nets, while Josh Place played well in the cage in the loss for Colchester. With the win the Hornets improved at 13-0-1. Colchester slips to 9-5-1.
