Four Goal Third Period Sends St. Anselm Past St. Michael's 7-4

Knights drop to 6-12-2 overall and 3-10-1 in the ECAC East

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team trailed Saint Anselm College by one goal early in the third period before the Hawks pulled away for a 7-4 win on Saturday in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East contest at Sullivan Arena. The Purple Knights drop to 6-12-2 overall and 3-10-1 in the ECAC East, while Saint Anselm improves to 8-8-3 and 4-8-2.

 

Freshman A.J. Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley College) tallied two power-play markers for the Purple Knights, while junior Connor Logan (Shelburne, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) and freshman John Teulings (Hamden, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) each scored. The marker was Teulings' first as a collegian. Freshman defenseman Mark Higgins (Plainville, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) extended his points streak to five games with an assist, and junior Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) stopped 32 shots in 51:52.

 

Freshman Liam McKillop (New York, N.Y./New York Bobcats) led the Hawks with three goals and one helper, while junior Mike Richard (Derry, N.H./New England Huskies) contributed one tally and three assists. Sophomore Steve Mollo (Saunderstown, R.I./Williston Northampton) put two in the back of the net. Sophomore Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J./Tabor Academy) made 33 saves.

 

Mollo scored twice in the first period, staking the hosts to a 2-0 advantage by 13:35, before Logan cut the Purple Knight deficit in half at 17:44. Juniors Justin Castagna (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Angeles Kings) and Dan Evarts (Hinesburg, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) earned the assists on the play.

 

Saint Anselm pushed its lead to 3-1 at 10:17 of the second, but Pieprzak scored his first marker on the man advantage a little more than a minute later, at 11:20, off a Higgins assist, and Saint Michael's trailed just 3-2 heading into the third period.

 

After McKillop pushed the hosts' advantage to 4-2 at 2:46 of the third, the Hawks increased the lead to five by 12:48 with three goals in a span of 1:08, with McKillop scoring twice and Richard adding a marker. Late in regulation, Teulings cut into the deficit, at 17:28, and Pieprzak completed the scoring at 19:19.

 

The Purple Knights continue their four-game road trip on Friday when they travel to No. 4 Castleton State College for an ECAC East match-up at 7 p.m. The Spartans are ranked fourth in Division III according to U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO).
