SB rolls over BHS 11-1 ... Colchester edges Rice 2-1 in Wednesday night Doubleheader
South Burlington --- The South Burlington Rebels crushed the Burlington Seahorses 11-1 and the Colchester Lakers edged the Rice Green Knights 2-1 in a Wednesday night boys hockey doubleheader at Cairns Arena.
In game one the Rebels jumped out to a 5-1 first period and rolled past the undermanned Seahorses, who dressed just 12 skaters and a goaltender for the game. Tommy Royer scored four goals and Chris Weinheimer added a pair for the Rebels, who outshot BHS 46-15. Three goaltenders combined to make 14 saves.
Captain Steven Ushakov scored for the Seahorses, who got 35 saves from senior Phil Comeau. With the win South Burlington improves to 10-1 on the season. The Seahorses are 1-10.
In the nightcap the Lakers and the Green Knights skated through a scoreless first period before Rice jumped ahead on a breakaway goal by freshman Sam Nestor two minutes into the second. That lead lasted just a minute though, as Colchester's Avery Steele netted the tying goal off a Matt Porter assist. That was how it stayed until under five minutes remained. Then Colchester's Matt Cuce carried the puck into the Rice zone and set up Ryan Francis. Francis' shot was stopped by Rice goaltender Ian Koupash, but Cuce jumped on the rebound and netted the game winner with 4:30 remaining.
With the win Cochester improves to 7-4-1 on the season. The Green Knights slip to 4-7.
