HOOKSETT, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team cashed in on a 4-for-7 power-play performance to pick up a 5-3 Northeast-10 Conference victory against Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday at the Ice Den. Now 3-6-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the league, the Purple Knights extended their unbeaten streak to three games. The Penmen are 1-13-1 and 0-4.
Five different Saint Michael's players scored goals, and eight had points. Junior captain Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) tallied a marker and a pair of assists, while classmate Michael Jangro (Reading, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) notched a goal and a helper. Junior defensemen Dan Evarts (Hinesburg, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) and Connor Logan (Shelburne, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) and freshman A.J. Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley College) scored once apiece, and junior Justin Castagna (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Angeles Kings) dished off two assists. Classmate Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) made 29 saves.
Freshman Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass./New Hampton School) played a role in all three Southern New Hampshire goals, scoring twice and adding a helper. Junior Craig Carbonneau (Medford, Mass./Norwich) added a goal and an assist, and sophomore Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass./South Shore Kings) had 32 stops.
Despite being outshot 12-3 in the opening period, the Purple Knights found themselves in a 1-1 draw at the first intermission thanks to Evarts' unassisted power-play marker with 3:02 remaining. Just 13 seconds after leaving the penalty box while serving an infraction assessed to the team, Pieprzak put the visitors on top for good 25 ticks into the second stanza, and Geary added a power-play marker at 3:02.
The Penmen twice trimmed the margin to one, but Saint Michael's responded with a goal on the man advantage each time. While holding a 3-2 edge in the third period, the visitors went back up by two when Jangro found the back of the net at 5:04. Logan again produced a two-goal advantage for his squad at 16:24, potting the first tally of his college career.
The Purple Knights travel to the Boston area for a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East contests this weekend, beginning with a Friday match-up with the University of Massachusetts at Boston at 7 p.m.
