Picard, McAdoo Lead Essex to Upset Win Over SB

Hornets Beat Playoff Bound Rebels 28-19

Essex --- Joey Picard threw for four touchdowns and Derek McAdoo caught three of them while rushing for 137 yards as the Essex Hornets upset the South Burlington Rebels 28-19 on Friday night at the Essex Field.

After South Burlington took the lead mid-way through the first quarter on a two yard touchdown pass fromophomore quarterback Hunter Riehle to senior Will Thompson the Hornets caught fire. McAdoo keyed a Hornets drive on the ground, before finishing off the drive by catching a nine yard TD pass from Picard with 1:54 left in the first quarter, tying the game at 7-7. Then with 5:43 left in the half, the same duo hooked up again, this time on a 14 yard scoring play as the upset minded Hornets took a 14-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Essex expanded their lead in the third as the same pair combined on a one yard TD pass play, pushing the margin to 21-7. The Rebels roared back, with Connor DeVarney finishing a long drive on a two yard run. But a missed extra point left the Essex lead at 21-13 after three. The Hornets then restored their two TD lead as Picard connected with wideout Steve Black on a 26 yard scoring play with 11:53 remaining. DeVarney ran in from six yards out with 5:28 left to cut the lead to 28-19, but SB again missed the extra point and they would get no closer.

Picard finished the night completing 18 of 34 passes for 124 yards and the four touchdowns.

Despite their win the 3-5 Hornets will not make the Division One playoffs, but will instead finish the season next week with a consolation game. The Rebels will be in the D-1 quarterfinals next week, but they will have to wait now to see if they will have a home game. That will be decided by the Middlebury/CVU on Saturday in Hinesburg.
