Lakers Run Past Raiders 39-20
Colchester --- After falling behind 7-0 early, the Colchester High School Lakers reeled off 32 unanswered points, going on to a 39-20 win over the Rutland Raiders on Friday night at the Laker Field.
Rutland took the lead on an 85 yard drive, scoring on a one yard run by KC Mee with three and a half minutes left in the first quarter. But Colchester answered immediately. Alec Kozlowski broke free for a 49 yard run to get the Lakers into the red zone, and then the senior back finished off the drive on a six yard run. The extra point kick failed, but the momentum had swung to the home team.
Colchester dominated the second quarter, as Bobby Brigante scored on a five run, Kozlowski raced in from 19 yards out, and David Lacroix broke free on a 62 yard scamper, building a 25-7 halftime advantage. After a scoreless 3rd quarter, the Lakers extended their lead to 32-7 as Brigante hauled in an eleven yard screen pass from quarterback Taylor St. Germaine with 7:47 remaining.
Rutland scored twice within 36 seconds late in the fourth ... Jeff Harte hauling in a 15 yard pass from quarterback Nick Boles and after recovering an onside kick, Joe Sullivan running in from a yard out to cut the lead to 32-20 with 2:56 to play. But Colchester held on, with Cory Benoit returning an interception 30 yards to pay dirt with 1:34 left to seal the win.
With the win Colchester is now 4-2 on the season. The loss drops the Raiders to 3-3.
