Week five of the Vermont high school football schedule proved to be a good one for mixing up the standings across the state. Division II has a new leader while Div. I and III leaders remain the same but with others right on their heels.
North Country has overtaken Milton for the top spot in Div. II thank to their blowout victory of Lyndon Institute, who entered the week as the fourth-ranked team in the Division. The loss, however, dropped the Vikings into sixth. Milton didn't fall too far as they earned a win at home against now 0-5 Springfield, but in QPR rating it is the Falcons edging Milton, 6.44 to 6.33.
Lyndon's loss and Fair Haven's win over Burr and Burton allowed the Slaters to move from fifth to third, forcing the Bulldogs down a slot into fourth. With a win at home Rice, who defeated Burlington, moved into fifth.
Next week will also be huge for Div. II as Milton hosts Fair Haven and Burr and Burton hosts Lyndon.
Hartford remains in the top spot in Div. I, but just barely. Both the Hurricanes and BFA-St. Albans have a QPR rating of 8.50 with Hartford at 5-0 and the Bobwhites at 4-1. BFA made the jump from fourth to second thanks to a win over previously unbeaten CVU, who dropped into fourth. Middlebury earned a non-divisional win over Otter Valley and remains undefeated and in third. South Burlington, Rutland, St. Johnsbury and Colchester round out 5-8. Brattleboro now sits in a tough ninth spot at 1-4 with a lot of room to make up to crack the top eight.
Nothing changed for the top four in Div. III as Windsor kept their top spot with a win over Montpelier. Next week matches up No. 2 Mill River and No. 4 Woodstock which could make Div. III a little more interesting. Top-seeded Windsor will face off with No. 7 Oxbow who looks to make a jump into the playoff picture.
