Rushes for Four Touchdowns in 49-21 CVU Win
Essex --- Junior running back Nick Ferrentino ran for 319 yards and scored four touchdowns Friday night, leading undefeated CVU past winless Essex 49-21 at the Essex Field.
CVU took advantage of Essex turnovers to build a 28-0 second quarter lead, fought off a Hornet comeback that cut the lead in half, then won the game going away. The visitors scored four first half touchdowns in a little over six minutes ... Ferrentino on a five yard run ... quarterback Drew Nick on a 20 yard keeper ... Ferrentino again on a 52 yard scamper ... and Brent Carreiro on a nine yard pass from Nick ... building their 28-0 edge two minutes into the second quarter.
But Essex responded, as QB Jack Valley connected with Trevor Yandow on a five yard TD pass and Willie McSoley on a 37 yard scoring strike to cut the lead to 28-14 at halftime. The Hornets got a stop to begin the third quarter, and with Valley on the bench with a cramp backup QB Joey Picard completed one pass for a first down in Redhawk territory, but his next throw was picked off by Carreiro, who returned it into Essex territory. Ferrentino finished off the subsequent drive with an eight yard touchdown run, and then completed his big night by rambling 74 yards on the final play of the third quarter to push the lead to 42-14 after three.
Patrick Shea's 12 yard fourth quarter run for CVU and Picard's 33 yard pass to Yandow for Essex rounded out the scoring.
The win keeps CVU tied for the Division One league lead at 3-0. The Hornets are 0-3.
