George Commo’s Blog – Monday Afternoon 12/5/16

The latest USCHO National college hockey polls are out and there was movement for several local area teams … some up … some down.

The UVM Men did not play over the past weekend … getting it off after their trip to Northern Ireland … and apparently not playing helps. The Catamounts jumped up two spots in the Division One men’s poll, moving from 14th to 12th. The Cats get back into action with a pair against 5th ranked BU this weekend at Gutterson.

The Norwich Men did play this past weekend, and their back to back wins over then #8 UMass-Boston and then #12 Babson were enough to jump the Cadets from 10th last week to 5th in this week’s rankings. Norwich finishes off the first semester against suddenly resurgent St. Michael’s on Friday night.

But while Norwich played, won and moved up, Plattsburgh’s men played, won and went down. The Cardinals took a 6-2 victory from Potsdam State on Friday night, but still slipped from #14 to #17 in the latest numbers. Plattsburgh will wrap up the first semester hosting Geneseo and Brockport this weekend at Stafford Ice Arena.

On the women’s side the University of Vermont Catamounts are still not up in the Division One rankings, but after their sweep of then #10 Northeastern on the road this past weekend they are at least now getting a vote … I guess that is progress for Coach Jim Plumer and his team.

In Division Three there is no way for the Plattsburgh women  to go any higher, but after their win on Saturday over Potsdam they remain #1 in the country. Meanwhile, after tying 2nd ranked Elmira on the road Norwich jumped up two spots to 4th this week, while a split with Connecticut College dropped Middlebury from 3rd to 6th.
