Boy’s Hoop: Redhawks Clinch Top Seed in Division One, Top Seahorses 57-48

BURLINGTON — The CVU Redhawks opened up a 20 point first half lead and held on to beat the defending Division One State Champion Burlington Seahorses 57-48 on Tuesday night inside Buck Hard Gym. The victory, CVU’s 15th in a row, avenged the Redhawks’ only loss of the season and secured for them the top seed in the VPA Division One Boy’s  tournament which begins next week.

CVU came out on fire, outscoring the ‘Horses 20-11 in the first quarter and continued the hot shooting into the second, opening a 35-15 lead before BHS netted the final four points to trail 35-19 at the break. CVU got 13 points from Walker Storey, and nine each from Josh Bliss and Colin Monsey in the first 16 minutes.

Burlington mounted a comeback in the third quarter, cutting the lead to nine on several occasions before another Redhawks run built the margin back to 14 at 48-34 after three. In the fourth CVU went ice cold from the floor, not netting a field goal until a layup by point guard Matt Spear in the final two minutes. But they were able to do enough at the foul line (7 of 12) to hold of the Seahorses who never got closer than seven.

Storey led the winners with 20 points. Monsey added 13 and Bliss finished with 12.

Kevin Garrison led BHS with 12 points. Hajui Haji added 11 and Kaden Rosamillia chipped in ten.

CVU is now 18-1. Burlington slips to 15-4.
