Remember you heard it here first over a week ago … we thought someone would take out the Stony Brook Seawolves come America East tournament time. Well yesterday the BU Terriers did the job, beating the Seawolves 70-63 in the semi-finals in Hartford. That left the door open for the UVM Catamounts, and with their win over UNH the Cats have landed home court for the league title game Saturday at noon at Patrick Gym. One word of warning here though for Vermont fans … all of you who were rooting for the Terriers yesterday … did you notice how well they were playing? Now they are the enemy again. Vermont has had their number in recent years, but BU will be a BIG challenge on Saturday.

Meanwhile the Vermont women are heading right back down to Hartford for the championship game on Saturday night … the Cats and the Hartford Hawks are the best two tedams in the league, and regardless of who wins their championship showdown this weekend there is a growing sentiment out there that they BOTH are going to be in the NCAA Tournament. Certainly it seems a lock for Hartford … even if they lose to UVM this weekend they should get a bid. As to the Catamounts … well they are 25-6 … in the mid 40’s in the RPI … and they have played a very good schedule with some solid non-conference wins. It is possible … but you know they would much rather just do it themselves by winning on Saturday night.

The Norwich Cadets and the Middlebury Panthers will both be at home for the NCAA Division Three quarterfinals this weekend. The Cadets will host the winner of a play in game between Curry and Elmira in their game … the Panthers, a 3-2 winner over Bowdoin yesterday in the NESCAC title game, will host the Plattsburgh Cardinals in their quarterfinals.
The UVM Hockey Cats will also be playing this weekend … but not at home. The Cats squeezed into the final Hockey East playoff spot on Saturday night with a tie at UMass-Lowell. Vermont will travel to top seed UNH for their best of three playoff series starting on Friday.
