#2 Vermont vs. # 6 New Hampshire
by Bill Murphy
Both teams started slow offensively and the game was tied 8-8 at the 11:36 mark. Pat Bergmann who plays better every game had four points and two rebounds while UNH was led by Dane DiLiegro and Colbey Santos with 3 each. Tyrone Conley of the Cats and Burlington, Vermont resident was sitting out the game with a possible broken foot.
Vermont then went on an 11-0 run over the next 3:50 to jump ahead 19-8. Evan Fjeld's two baskets triggered the explosion. Now with 7:46 remaining in the half Fjeld leads UVM in scoring 6. Vermont has outscored the number 6 seed 16-2 in the paint.
UNH calmed the Vermont surge down with a 6-3 edge over the next 4:46. Two hoops by Ferg Myrick led that effort.
The Wildcats continued their attack until intermission. Defenses dominated as the Granite Staters outscored the Green Mountain Boys over the last 3:00 to make the score at halftime 24-20 UVM. At halftime Fjeld with 8 and Garvey Young with 7 paced Vermont. Fjeld and Bergmann had 4 rebounds. Both teams only had two assists each as the game featured much one on one basketball and outside shooting. Myrick led the trail team with 6.
Vermont changed the tide with four straight hoops to open the second half and extend the lead to 32-20. Young had two of the hoops.
