George Commo's Blog - Sunday 3-7-10

The UVM Hockey Catamounts are in the Hockey East playoffs … Vermont’s 1-1 tie with UMass-Lowell last night was enough, thanks to a 4-3 Northeastern loss to BU which left the Huskies on the outside looking in. Vermont may not have gone in with a glorious victory … but they are in as the eight seed … and now get a trip to UNH and a series with the top seeded Wildcats next weekend.

Meanwhile the Norwich Cadets are into the NCAA Division Three tournament … that after a 4-1 win over Babson in the ECAC East Championship game last night … Norwich and Oswego State should be the top seeds in the East … one/perhaps both .. will get seeded right into the Quarterfinals when the tournament field is announced later tonight. Middlebury should be in the field as well … they can guarantee it with a win over Bowdoin in this afternoon’s NESCAC Championship game.

In basketball the UVM Women and men are both playing today in America East semi-finals … the women against BU/ the men vs UNH. The men advanced with a quarterfinal win last night over UMBC.

Meanwhile a great season is over for the Middlebury men … Despite a 25 point night by Ryan Sharry, Jeff Brown’s club lost to Rhode Island College in the NCAA Regional Final last night at Pepin Gym … Midd ends another big hoop season at 25-4.

On the high school side four boy’s hoop champions were crowned yesterday … and despite the fact that all four winners were number two or three seeds don’t you dare call any of them upsets.
In Division One #2 Essex beat #1 Burlington for the title. BHS lost only two games all year, but both loses were to Essex.
In D-2 U-32 beat Missisquoi in the final … no surprise there as they had taken out #2 Harwood in the semis …
In D-3, while the margin of victory for Hazen Union … 72-49 … in their win over top seeded and previously undefeated Lake Region might have raised a few eyebrows, no win by either side in that great North Central Vermont rivalry should every be considered an upset …
And in D-4 … Yes, it was a surprise to see #1 Proctor’s four year reign and 48 game winning streak end at the hands of #2 Williamstown … but hey, Williamstown came into the game 22-1. Is that an upset? I don’t think so.
