UNH UPSETS UPSTART MAINE 68-57

The University of New Hampshire pulled off the only upset on quarterfinal day of the America East tourney dumping Maine 68-57. The Mainers had won both regular season match-ups but the third time became New Hampshires charm.
Maine shot out to a 13-6 lead after the first five minutes but then UNH went on a 35-16 run over the next 21 minutes to take command.
Winning coach Bill Herrion claimed "defense wins championships and we played it well today," but also importantly added "but it doesn't hurt that we hit our shots." He might have added hit our three pointers of which New Hampshire had eight.
Colbey Santos and Brian Benson led the Wildcats in scoring with 13. Dane DiLiegro played his usual sterling inside game with 11 rebounds while adding 9 points. Tyrone Conleyalso had 9 with Colbey Santos adding 8. Maine had two players in double figures. Sean McNally and Terrance Mitchell had 16 and 11 respectively. Maine picked for eighth had their best season in a long time. |
